FROM $12.00 TO $15.00

The garbage rate will increase from $12.00 to $15.00 with the water bill that goes out at the end of January 2022 and is due by February 15, 2022.

Unfortunately due to the rising costs for garbage collection service the City has to raise the rate for all residential and commercial accounts.  As the costs of providing this service has risen in the last five years and the City has been absorbing these costs we must now raise the rates accordingly so that the City is not making a profit from it but we are at least breaking even so that the City is not losing money by providing this service to our citizens.

Our previous contractor Republic Services approached the City a few months ago to inform us that their rate for their service was going to have to go to $13.98 a month per can.  While it would have been much easier to stay with Republic Services the City Council chose to go out for Request for Proposals for the garbage collection service to try and keep your garbage rates as low as possible.

Knights Services, LLC was the lowest proposal at $12.00 per can. The garbage contract was awarded to Knights Services for the next three years.

While the charge for residential and commercial cans are $12.00 per can, there are other hidden costs involved in the garbage collection service such as there are 9 dumpsters around town for residential use and a roll off unit at the maintenance shop for the city’s use which the city pays for pick up and disposal fees associated with all of these units.  There are administrative costs for the time spent by city employees for doing the billing and collecting of the garbage fee that is then sent to the contractor for the payment of their services.

Mayor Huddleston and the City Council just wanted to let you know the reasons for this rate increase.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact us at City Hall (318) 539-5681.
